Emergency Financial Assistance for Artists

The following foundations and organizations provide emergency assistance for qualified artists. Please visit the websites for further details, applications and deadlines.

Craft Emergency Relief Fund

In order to be eligible for CERF assistance an applicant must be a Professional Craft Artist. Craft is the creation of original objects by the skillful manipulation of materials. These materials were traditionally considered to be clay, fiber, metal, wood, or glass. However, today’s craft artist may also employ concrete, plastic, synthetic fibers, recycled materials and other non-traditional materials. Craft objects may be functional or nonfunctional, but both types derive part of their meaning from their association with traditional functional forms such as chairs, vessels, garments or implements. Qualities that contribute to the success of a craft object include the skill of the maker, the beauty of the material, the refinement of the design, the familiarity of the form, the originality of expression - or all of these. Assistance may be in the form of a grant or a loan.

Gottlieb Foundation

The Emergency Assistance Program is intended to provide interim financial assistance to qualified artists whose needs are the result of an unforeseen, catastrophic incident, and who lack the resources to meet that situation. Each grant is given as one-time assistance for a specific emergency, examples of which are fire, flood, or emergency medical need. The program does not consider requests for dental work, chronic situations, capital improvements, or projects of any kind; nor can it consider situations resulting from general indebtedness or lack of employment. The maximum amount of this grant is $10,000; an award of $4,000 is typical.

Pollock-Crasher Foundation

The Foundation welcomes, throughout the year, applications from visual artists who are painters, sculptors and artists who work on paper, including printmakers. There are no deadlines. The Foundation encourages applications from artists who have genuine financial needs that are not necessarily catastrophic. Grants are intended for a one-year period of time. The Foundation will consider need on the part of an applicant for all legitimate expenditures relating to his or her professional work and personal living, including medical expenses. The size of the grant is determined by the individual circumstances of the artist.
